using the internet

Hi, just wondering if anyone could help me.
I am pretty limited in my knowledge of linux and so have been playing with some of the live cds. The flavours being: knoppix, slax, ubuntu and berry.
I have been able to use them in each case, but I couldn't access the internet on any of them.
I have broadband, therefore my pc has a ethernet card. I am also using a router, a d-link di-604.
I must need to do some configuring, but what?
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Anything would be much appreciated.
Many Thanks
