UBUNTU questions

I just recently downloaded the fresh copy of UBUNTU LINUX it went very well very nice OS. except i couldn't able to run certain softwares. i had look for my documentation on my cd's to see anything for linux i figured its only for windows. my question then is that would be using Wine to emulate? i'm really new on linux so this is kind of important otherwise i might reinstall windows XP.

Hmmm.... Are you saying you've been trying to run Windows software on your Ubuntu machine? As to wine.... It can be kind of a pain to set up. I've used it a few times with mixed results as I didn't have much time to spend learning it and haven't needed to use it since. Some programs seem to work without a whole lot of configuration, others seem to take a lot more work to get wine to run them. However, take that with a grain of salt as I'm no wine expert by any stretch of the imagination.

I would also recommend that is you don't have much time to learn Linux, use Ubuntu live CD (that you run from the CD and not the hard drive). Or another such CD as Knoppix or SUSe, and whenever you have a few moments to spare fire it up and play with it a bit.

yeah, i tried the linux live CD's they are quite useful but your kind of limited in some ways i think. but there's alot of distros out there it's gonna take me awhile till i get the right one. yeah, i heard SUse is good but i need the that really suits my needs. but it's amazing so much you can do with Linux.

I recommended the live CD's so you can get the "feel" of linux until you have time to take a course on it. Just something to play around with and learn the difference between Windows and Linux. Ubuntu, Knoppix, Morphix and I believe Mepis are all based on the very popular Debian Linux flavor. So when you learn how to navigate one you will half way to knowing how to get around any Debian based Linux flavor. The same with the GUI Desktops. They mostly use either KDE or Gnome. Learn one you learned them all.
