Linux Sound Problem

I am new to Linux and installed Mandrake 10.1 yesterday. Everything went smooth as could be...except for sound. When I finished the install, it said to use ALSAconfig or sndconfig to configure my soundcard. I spent some time looking, but can't find them. Also, I was told to run a program to populate my find database in root. How do I complete both of these actions...I want to start exploring Linux but want to fix these first. Your welcome to email me if you have the solution. Thanks!!!

Try posting your problem here:

http://mandrivausers.org/index.php?act=idx

It's a mandrake specific forum and will get more results for you. Also post what sound card you are using for more meaningful help.
