SuSE 9.1 Pro Prob

As the title suggests, I have SuSE 9.1 Pro and a problem. I want to be able to do some 3D work on it, but my onboard video (at least this is what SuSE says) doesn't support 3D. I have an nVidia 5200 PCI, but SuSE doesn't like nVidia. I don't have internet on that comp, so downloading drivers is kind of out. I was wondering if I could use an ATI card that supports 3D. Is SuSE compatiable with ATI? Thanks!

PS

I have a MSI KM400A (something or other) motherboard, but the drivers are for windows ( ), so no luck there I guess.

Do you have internet on any other computer?

If so you should check out you manufacturers website if there are any drivers burn to CD copy to home folder and then install or compile the drivers but before you do that did you chek out the Video Card database under YAST I found that my Video Card listing was under the intel manufacturers driver section?

Is the video onboard or add-on?

It's a BFG nVidia 5200 FX PCI. I really just want it for the 3D acceleration nothing. The computer doesn't have internet on it, but might soon.

Sorry about the late reply, I forgot about the post, heh heh

The nVidia "drivers" for Linux are a kernel patch. The patch covers all known nVidia video cards. I've done this on Debian with a nVidia card that was manufactured with Dell's name on it. I had a hard time even finding out who manufactured the card. The card was that old and obscure. I've also done this with other nVidia cards too. It's a one size fits all for nVidia video drivers where Linux is concerned.

Here is a link to the instructions on patching the SuSe kernel for nVidia. Hope it helps. Back everything up first and go for it.

If you are getting internet access in suse soon, you may want to wait. Once you have internet access, you can automatically install the nvidia driver through yast with minimal hassle.
Nvidia has the best linux drivers going; they are equall to, if not better than, their windows drivers.
Ati has started making a linux driver for their cards but their drivers really suck compared to nvidia. However, there is an open source driver for ati cards which has OK 3d support. The open source nvidia driver does not have 3d support as you know.
Bottom line, you will get excellent 3d results from an nvidia card with the proprietary linux drivers from nvidia. You will get some 3d support from the ati card using the open source driver, providing it's one of the older models. Ati's linux drivers are for their newer cards only and have had a rep of being buggy and difficult to install.

I will wait then. Save me some headaches. I tried installing the card and Linux wouldn't boot. Thanks for the help!

The reason SUSE doesn't include the Nvida drivers with the distro is due to leagal stuff.

FYI

New Problem.

I wanted to add a 15GB Quantum Fireball HD to the system. After I did, I decided to install Ubuntu on that HD. I did so and everything worked fine, but I decided I would rather have the extra space then Ubuntu (GRUB was reinstalled for Ubuntu). So I booted into SuSE and formatted the HD, I noticed my settings were changed a bit, but that was OK. I rebooted, but SuSE would not boot. GRUB says "Error 17". I removed the HD and it says "Error 21". I just want to access my files so I can back them up then I can reinstall. I reinstalled Ubuntu to see if I could get the files from there, but I can't because I am not the root user and I don't know/can't find the root password.

Now from GRUB I can get to SuSE, but it's only text-based.

Any help on how to get to my files would be much appreciated.

Thanks!
