Ok, so I'm trying to get X-Terminals to work on my Linux systems. I have Google searched this topic an number of times with various combinations of keywords, but to no avail. Other people have obviously gotten it to work, but it just doesn't for me.
I've followed the instructions of this guide, but all I get is a black screen with an X cursor, the login manager never displays. My server is running SuSE Linux 9.3 Pro and my login manager is KDM. It is my wish to login via KDM (although I wouldn't mind if XDM is used for the remote clients as long as it doesn't effect local logons) and run KDE 3.4 (installed on the terminal server). My client is also running a full install of SuSE Linux 9.3 Pro with graphical environment (for now). Can anyone relate to this problem? If so, how did you fix it? Oh, and one more thing. Please don't suggest using a VNC. I've seen the results, and they are not what I'm looking for. (not to sound pompous or anything) Thanks. -Shadow |

Have you tried using the ssh method first explained on the link you gave?
I've never tried exporting a full desktop using xdm or kdm, but how much better can the exported desktop be than what rdesktop provides? I find it no different than running terminal services in remote administration mode, and that's just like being logged onto the server itself. I use rdesktop to administer my Windows servers from my Linux desktop, and once I played with the settings it was just as good as terminal services. I'm not trying to convince you to do something else, just wondering why you need to export a full desktop. You like me and just like to work at something until you figure it out, and exporting a desktop is something you really want to learn? |

Yes, the SSH method worked fine...
I've tried using rdesktop with my windows servers as well and that's all fine and good, but, it's not for remote linux logins. I'm talking about a pure linux environment. As far as a reason well, there are three: 1) Just because I wish to know how; 2) because NX servers (see nomachine.com for details) use exported displays to my understanding (I wish to use this to access my linux box over the internet); and 3) because I have an old computer laying around I'm going to turn into a full time terminal and rely on my faster Linux box to give it a boost. |

OK. Understood. Makes sense to me. Sorry I'm not of any real help. I've just never had learning this one as any type of priority.

I just ran across something today that might be of interest to you, shadowsorcerer. It's called FREENX. Here is a link to the home page. It looks like it might be a solution to what you were trying here. There is a SuSe package available on the downloads page.

Additionally, take a peek at installing the Linux Terminal Server (see www.ltsp.org ). I don't have much experience with SuSE + LTS, but it is my understanding that it'll install on top of almost any linux distro that meets the requirements.
