Boom MAS OS Upgrade

I know this isnt the "right" forum to be asking this but im in need of help.

I have a PMG4 466 Apple Computer that has Mac OS 9.2 installed and I need to upgrade it to MAC OS X. I purchased the OS and a LaCie External Firewire DVD drive to install it. The box says I need 256MB to install. I only have 128MB currently isntalled and after I boot from the DVD and askes me what language I want it kinda just freezes. Do I need to have 256MB in order for it to install or is it a different problem. Can it be that I am using an External Firewire DVD Drive to install. The G4 only has a CD-Rom.

PLEASE HELP!!
