1 I have bought the intel 536EP hardware (i doubt it) 56K modem
2 I downloaded the intel 536ep.tgz drivers 3 made all the necessary steps to install the drivers but i have hit a snag when i arrived at the step 5 #make356 on the bash shell it shows me an error something like "make 356 stopped no rule defined", in the redme file it does not say anything about rules on the make 356 step what can i do?

I remember getting an error like that once. If I remember correctly it had to do with not being in the correct directory when I ran make. I'm not positive though as it's been a long time since that happened.

Also, make sure you have your kernel source installed. This is necessary to compile any kernel module.

What distro are you working with right now? I see elsewhere here where you said you were using Debian, but is that still what you're using?

After a couple of minutes of research I've found this much. You can't use the original 536EP drivers from Intel with the 2.6 kernel. Won't work. There is however a new driver out from Intel but it won't work with kernels older than 2.6.10, and if you're running Debian Sarge with the stock kernel you're running 2.6.8 so there isn't a driver out there that will work for you until Intel decides to support kernels older than 2.6.10, or you install or compile a kernel from unstable. I compiled and used the 2.6.11 kernel from source out of unstable and had no problems with it on one of my machine rebuilds so it's workable in Sarge.
That appears to be your only possible solution other than switching distros as I found some SuSe rpm driver packages for this modem. |

After testing the following debian sarge and mandriva 2005 LE I have decided to stick with fedora core V4
for the simple reason refresh rate is higher under fedora core making it very esy to work with and better compatibility with x.org as with xf86 had a few compatibility issues with my monitor under debian |

Now i am starting from the begining:
Modem intel 356ep v92 fedora core 4 1 what do I need to download or install and where to get the files? 2 kernel sources -- I have installed all the files under fedora what to do with those? 4 how should i prepare myself to compile/install the drivers? I am going to try this ask for advice before compiling for I am lost in this issue. thank you for your reply Last edited by Ind-PC_student; 08-23-2005 at 08:02 AM. |

All the vendor kernel modules I've seen come with a Readme file which generally explains how to install the module. If there is such a file, could you post it here or at least the parts you don't understand. The problem is that these vendor supplied kernel modules vary quite a bit when it comes to the install procedure.
