I am just curios what the deal really is with the modems not able to work under Linux. I understand that they don't have controllers, but can't drivers be created for them in the same way as under Windows. I thank all that reply for the information on this topic. Leo.

Yes, drivers can be written in Linux for winmodems.
One for the Lucent has been around for over a year, and I believe there's one somewhere for the SoftK56V, as well as a beta for the HCF. |

Some Winmodems are now Linmodems as well .. check out:
