I recommened either slackware or fedora linux. SLackware is good if you have older hardware, I have it running on a 350mhz PII with 64 Mb ram.

You'll probably get opinions all over the place but a good place to start looking is here:

I always recommend Knoppix as a great place to start. It has most of the programs you need to do anything, MP3 players, CD burners, Open Office software which is as good as windows office. It also has three windows emulators for software written for windows. It may not be as fast as someothers because of all the software. But it is easy to load has great hardware recognition and can be played from the CD and not installed to the hardrvie until you're sure it is right for you.

Thanks for the replies, Knoppix i've been trying to download from http://www.linuxiso.org/ but cant seem to connect. It looks especailly good since i want to see what the fuss is about with linux before committing myself.

SLackware also sounds really good, since i will probally use it ona P2400 128 ram laptop
