My first Linux exposure has been with Ubuntu. Has a "look" similar to Windows. You can download two types from the Ubuntu site. One allows you to fully install the os on your hard drive while the other can run from the CD. You might want to try the CD version first and see if you like the Ubuntu distro.

I would also recommen that you pick up a book on linux to learn the basics, on old used one can be had fairly cheap and once you learn the bacics it will be the same on all distro's

My advice is download the online, tux magazine it teaches tricks and tips on linux download any issue you like and you willl find it very usefull, email subscription required.
http://www.tuxmagazine.com/ read and enjoy By the way linux is easier then most people think! just don't expect linux will behave like windows. never log in as root enjoy stress free computing. Last edited by Ind-PC_student; 09-18-2005 at 06:35 AM. |

First time like PR was on ubuntu, like he said similar look to windows. Try the cd version first to make sure all your hardware is Linux compatable and if you like it, if so then proceed and install. It has a relatively easy instal process.

I would get "Rute User's Tutorial and Exposition" it can be found at the following website.
http://rute.2038bug.com/index.html.gz It is a very well written book, I downloaded it, then I purchased a hard copy of it. you won't be disappointed. Mike
