DS linux
-I have been playing around with DS linux on my other computer(very old), and really like it and am impressed with the speed the old computer is actually running at. I am using it like a live cd because the hdd on that computer (if you followed my other thread) is failing and there are lots of bad sectors on it.
-Do you think if I got a 36gb SATA hard drive for my computer in my sig, and installed DS linux on that hdd I woud get good preformance and super fast speeds for opening browsers and word processing (everything but gaming which ill leave on XP)? -If so, how would I go about making a dual boot prompt to ask me which to boot from? -And, would I have to unplug my two 300gb seagates before installing DSL to make sure that they arent accessible from linux and to make sure when I let it install on the new hard drive that it installs there and not over top of my other drives? -Or should I install Ubuntu (which I also like) on that hdd and would I get better preformance? I know Ubuntu comes with many more software packages, which would be useful to me since I would probably like to do most of my word processing and internet browing from Linux (either distro). TIA, ryan124712

Why not just by a HD for the old box and buy a kvm switch so you don't have to tamper with your other box? Best of both worlds... imo

I'd install ubuntu as your hardware is more than adeqequate for any modern linux distro. It will give you a lot more flexibility than DSL. The dual booting will be automatically set up by the ubuntu installer by default.
There are also several 64 bit linux distros out. I know both mandriva and suse have 64 bit versions. You might want to take a look at those as well. |

Ok, thanks alot, I will definate look at a 64 bit version since I dont need all the driver to play games b/c I will play games on XP, and im glad to know that ubuntu will set up the dual boot automatically, I will purchase the harddrive this weekend.
Thanks again, and I am open for more suggestions. |
