DSL on laptop, no cd, USB
I just aquired a VERY old laptop (Pentium 120Mhz, 16MB RAM, no cd drive, no USB, no network connection, and only a floppy drive)
It is currently running a verry bogged down Windows 95, it has to be reinstalled. Problem is, i dont have the install floppies. I was thinking of just putting Damn Small on the Hard drive (~1GB). How would I go about doing this? do i need like 30 floppies?? thanks |

Sorry, I for some reason thought this was in a windows OS category, and not alternative! At any rate if you can't get any distro of linux to work you can always try this. Sorry
This is what I have done in the past with similar laptops, but instead install Windows 98. Remove the hard drive from the laptop and install it into a 2.5" USB external case that can be had for around $12.00 locally or at least to me. Hook it up to any machine that has an available USB port and CD-ROM. Format using FAT, make it bootable, and copy over the cab files. It might be preferable to place the cab files in the following folder: C:\windows\options\cabs which you will have to create. The cab files on the 98 cd are in the WIN98 folder. Put the drive back in to the laptop and turn it on. When it boots to the C:\prompt, navigate to C:\windows\options\cabs and type SETUP. From there you can install the OS and have a functioning laptop. Good luck If you decided to try something like this, when you run the setup windows will try and install the OS in C:\windows.000 but choose NO and change it to just C:\windows without the zeros. You will get some warning message but just continue anyways. Edrod13

simple do what edrod13 said; install DSL onto the laptop hardrive whilst it is in the host system, then put it back into the laptop. hardware changes will not be an issue as Linux will find all of the new parts for you. You shouldn't have many problems considering the laptop has such a little amount of devices.

A 2.5" to IDE adapter is cheaper than a USB housing.
