HORRIBLY slow BitTorrent
I am using GNOME Bittorrent, and trying to download a few large files (~700mb). I've tried around 20 different files, and all of them download terribly slowly (like 0.5-4.0 kb/s)
This is on a Ubuntu machine I have just started using it... am I doing something wrong?? Thanks |

The GNOME client is pretty terrible, grab Azureus from Synaptic. Also, make sure you have your BitTorrent port open on your router.

I have 4mb Comcast and I got the same speeds. The ports needed for the program were open on my router and my firewall...same speed. I'm pretty sure this is how it works, The more files you have shared and the more people that are downloading from you, the faster the download speeds. I was downloading Lost Season 2 episodes and it took me a whole week off and on to download. At about 75% done, the speeds were up to like 25kbps because I had more of the file that people could download. I read on another forum site with 45 PAGES of replies to the original post with people with the same problem.

It mainly depends on who and how many people your downloading from, if you downloading off 1 guys with DSL then its only going to go as fast as his upload speed. On the other hand if your downloading from 50 people but they all have dialup then you'll download at their max upload speed combined (about 50kb/s). The best combo would be a lot of people on high speed internet.
I have learned that if I need to download something form bitorrent or any kind of P2P then there is no point in getting into a hurry, 9 times out of 10 it will download slow so I just leave my system on and let it download at whatever speed it wants. |

I feel your pain. P2P can be slow. If you ever get tired of it, newsgroups are wonderful. I like the speed, selection, and anonymity.

fastest BTclient i think is Bittornado.make sure you open ports through your router and your software firewall(like zonealarm) isnt blocking it
obviously download from where there are most seeds, and a fair number of peers. if you are behind a university firewall like me(damn Nottingham Uni) i doubt bittorrent is able to achive full speeds let alone connect |
