linux

O'k linux is confosing me their are like 50 different types of it. I want the bottom line what is the flippin difference????

Yes, there are many distros. In general they can be clasified depending on their specific functions. There are distros like Endian and SmoothWall used only for a firewall, there are ones like Ubuntu which are great for desktop purposes, there are ones which are much more powerful for developing, and ones geared for server applications. Also there are 32 and 64 bit distros and distros made to run without the need of high system requierments like DamnSmallLinux. What is it exactly you have in mind?

like I want to want to run it on my laptop a Dell inspiron 8600. I am thinking like redhat I found it for like 9.00 at amazon. is that any good?

Since you are just starting out, I suggest trying a live linux cd like knoppix, PCLinuxOS, kannotix, etc. They write nothing to your hard drive and allow you to test drive the various linux distros. Here's a link listing the ever growing number of live cds available:

I'd agree, Live CDs are great for playing and getting a feel for Linux without making a commitment.

i have found many problems running Knoppix and LIVE linux distros on laptops. just my input. its hard to find one that suits your laptop and has the proper drivers

I have tried running a live CD and I don't know if I did it right so really would like the help for walking me step by step for the live Cd process. like from buning it to a disk to up and running

Don't let cost drive a decision here... Many (read most) are free to DL and burn distros on the web including Redhat.
