Yes, there are many distros. In general they can be clasified depending on their specific functions. There are distros like Endian and SmoothWall used only for a firewall, there are ones like Ubuntu which are great for desktop purposes, there are ones which are much more powerful for developing, and ones geared for server applications. Also there are 32 and 64 bit distros and distros made to run without the need of high system requierments like DamnSmallLinux. What is it exactly you have in mind?

Since you are just starting out, I suggest trying a live linux cd like knoppix, PCLinuxOS, kannotix, etc. They write nothing to your hard drive and allow you to test drive the various linux distros. Here's a link listing the ever growing number of live cds available:

I'd agree, Live CDs are great for playing and getting a feel for Linux without making a commitment.

Don't let cost drive a decision here... Many (read most) are free to DL and burn distros on the web including Redhat.
I also found a Linux for Laptops page... http://www.linux-laptop.net/ Whoops Can't forget this... Here are the distros http://www.linuxiso.org/
