CRASH linux server

Ok, I am rather new to linux and wanted to make a linux server out of an old computer of mine. What I need to know is which linux to use, and how to best set it up. I see all these linux distro's for donwload but am Not sure which one would actually work for my needs. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

This lists the most popular distros and their +/-'s. It may help you. I use FreeBSD myself which is not Linux but free.

Ok,I downloaded ubuntu and I cannot get it to run. I keep getting xserver (graphical interface) problems. I have tried to lookup a way to solve this probelm , but being a complete newbie to linux, I do not understand how to use the info I am finding on the net. I have an old computer I am trying to put this on, specs are.

450 amd k6-2
512 pc133 ram
nvidia 32 meg video card
ethernet card
usb card

I am not sure of the motherboard.

Any help would be great, as I said I am a complete newbie, but I want to learn.
