Question switch gui to text on boot

Installed white box linux and when I did I installed with gui
interface to start learning and know how to get to os thru terminal,
but wanted to start in text mode and thought that I just need to change
run mode in inittab or something like that but cant figure it out.
Any recommendations.
Thanks mq1

In general, you just change this line in inittab from:

id:5:initdefault:

to:

id:3:initdefault:

However, debian based distros do it a little differently IIRC.

Question

I will give it a try.
I also had another question although I dont know if I should
post another or just add on to this one.
Just trying to learn and get around and try a few things and
I dont know how to get internet service on this machine so I
dont have to type on another when I have questions and then
go back to the other one.
My internet service right now is aol from ????? and on a dial up.
Is there anyway to connect to aol?
Thanks ahead of time for any and all answers.

I thankfully haven't been on dialup for quite a while but I'll try to answer your questions. Most recent modems are classified as "winmodems". As the name implies, winmodems are specifically tied to the windows operating system for processing info a modem would normally process on board. Winmodems are not supported in linux but there is a project called the linmodem project that has some success getting some winmodems working under linux.
If you are lucky enough to have a true hardware modem that actually does the processing on the modem card hardware instead of handing it off to the OS(unlikely), you can usually get those working in linux. Most, but not all, external modems that hook up to a serial port are true hardware modems.
Even if you overcome the modem issue, aol does not support linux but there may be some hacks out there that allow you to access aol from linux. That's another issue that I thankfully do not have to deal with.
