Remove Ubuntu

I loaded Ubuntu on a second drive and it went in without any problems and runs very well – stable and Windows like gui. But--- I have too many Windows compatible programs to switch to Ubuntu. I dual boot but the default is Ubuntu and it is a pain on restarts to select the op sys. Windows explorer does not see the second drive – this happened when I loaded Ubuntu – and I want to format the drive and use it as a backup for the c drive. How do I delete Ubuntu and how do I eliminate the dual boot screen on startup?

Athlon 2500
XP Professional
512 Ram
120 C 40 second drive

Do you have your Windows Installation disk?

If so here is one way :
Boot from windows installation disk, when asked to make partitions delete the one with ubuntu on it and format it... exit the installation and boot up in your normal windows OS... you should see the drive.

But be careful when deleting the partition, make sure you know which drive you are deleting and not accidentally deleting the one you want to keep.

I think you may have to use the WinXP CD to repair it. If Win98SE try Fdisk /mbr. This is why I love removable hard drive bays and Linux LiveCDs, at least until I get lots more RAM and can have more than one operating system active at the same time.

Put the WinXP disc in boot it from the cd drive. When it starts to load Windows and asks if you want the repair console hit R, it will ask for a password just hit enter then select the drive usually C. Then type fixmbr and that should fix it.

I booted from the XP cd and had the option of Repair or a new XP setup. I chickened out and did nothing. I am a bit afraid or trying fixmbr as I have never used it and don't want foul up my C drive. Also I have the problem of having to select the Op Sys to run when I boot up. Can I remove that from my boot procedure?

If all else fails you could probably just run the windows apps off wine with a little configuration

[PS Ryan, I think I have the same case as you (Diablotek Demon Case II?)]

You can probably uninstall grub from with in Linux, I never tried. fixmbr works I know as I have used it in the past in your situation.

You can set partitions and reformat from Windows Disk Management applet located in the Control Panel / Administrative Tools
