I'm pretty sure you mean GNOME and not GNU.

GNOME and KDE are different desktop environments for Linux. Each has its pros and cons, so I would recommend you try both to see which one you like. Personally, I prefer KDE... it has a much cleaner look, but both are very good.

Most run KDE. Fedora, Debian, SUSE, and lots more. KDE is the most like the Windows desktop and GNOME is like the Mac desktop. There are links to each.

http://www.kde.org/
http://www.gnome.org/

There are many, many more desktop environments (BlackBox and WindowMaker, to name a few), but KDE and GNOME are the two biggest ones.

If you are talking versions of Linux, I would say that no version of Linux is for a beginner. I learned on SUSE and then moved to Fedora. I would try Fedora (http://fedora.redhat.com/), it has GNOME and KDE, so you can try both. Since you are probably coming from Windows, KDE is good to learn on because it looks a lot like Windows and should be an easy transition. Hope that helps.

I disagree. I would not recommend fedora/RH for kde. RH is very gnome-centric. Their implementation of kde has been harshly criticised in the past and with good reason. Back around RH9, they greatly altered kde in order to give a more unified look and feel across gnome and kde environments. In the process, kde was badly butchered. It was so bad that one of the kde developers that worked for RH quit in protest and publicly criticisized RH for their mangling of kde.

For newbies wanting kde, I recommend either suse or mandriva. For gnome try ubuntu or fedora.

I agree, Kunbuntu works good with kde. I am just a beginner myself and so far this version of linux is easy to work with, and install.
