Multi boot advice appreciated
Hope someone can help...
I currently have a Linux only system, which has a 15GB drive installed, running Ubuntu. It would be useful however, if i could have Windows on this system too. I have installed a second 10GB drive in this system for this purpose, as the second drive on the primary IDE. My plan was to run a Windows 2000 install on the second drive, and knowing that the MBR on the first drive would probably be overwritten, then install Acronis OS manager (which I have already) as my boot loder. HOWEVER, upon trying to install W2k, the setup informed me that, because there were only linux partitions on Drive 1, it could not write a MBR...setup would not continue. I thought the MBR was written before the first partition begins? Any suggestions / ways around this would be appreciated. I had thought of removing the linux drive, and installing windows on the second drive, then re-connecting the linux drive and configuring Acronis to manage the boot. Does this seem like a sensible way to proceed? Thanks, Freakitchen

I have run into this before as well. I never did find a satisfactory reason why Windoze has a problem with this. What I do now (and I do a lot of multi boot configs) is install Windows before I install any other OS. Since you already have your linux up and running, and no doubt don't want to break it......
Try this: Swap the linux drive to the 2nd (slave) position. Put the new drive in the first (master) position. Install windoze on drive 1. After the sucsessful windoze install, reinstall whatever boot loader you want (I use GRUB). Just remember that your linux is now on hdb.

Thanks loads for the help guys. Managed to get the problem sorted, but will definitely be doing linux installs after windows in the future.
Also, thanks for the link to the ubuntu wiki...having just moved distros from fedora, I wasn't aware that existed. Freakitchen |
