Setting up a Linux router
Can anyone give me a step-by-step guide (or even a link to a useful guide-ish site) that can show a Linux noob how to set up an old box as a router?
Oh, and what kind of system specs would a router system need? The best I have lying around are Pentium 2s, but given that Linux is better with resources than any Windows system, would this be sufficient? |

I've got a Pentium Pro 200 with 48 MB of RAM set up as a firewall/router at home running Devil Linux. It's pretty easy to setup and requires very little (if any) Linux knowledge.

Good, because I have none. Would it be just as easy to set it up with any other distro of linux (redhat, Ubuntu, mandrake) as it would with Linux Router Project? I've scoured the web and can't find a working download for LRP, and I'd rather have it running off the hard drive than on floppy. The 2 distros that I have already are Mandrake 6.2 (i think) and the newest Ubuntu.
Is there any particular distro that you would recommend? What would be the easiest to set up while remaining stable enough for operation 24/7? Last edited by RazorDX; 12-27-2005 at 10:43 AM. |

A lot of people like SmoothWall, but its not for me. Going with a complete distro like Mandrake or Ubuntu would work, but it a bit overkill and it will require you to configure the services yourself, as they are not installed out of the box.

I've been using IpCop (http://ipcop.sourceforge.net) for a couple years now and really like it. Extremely easy to setup and configure. HTH
