New Linux machine on a Windows network.
I'm having trouble networking my recently-installed Linux computer with my Windows XP PC. I've gone all over the net trying to figure out how it all works, but it just won't work completely. I've gotten it to the point where I can ping the XP comp with the Linux machine, but I cannot ping the Linux machine with the XP comp. My distro is Mandriva LE 2005 (ie. 10.2). I have a router between the two of them and as far as I can tell that's working as it should. I'm using Samba on the Linux one. It seems to me like it's a problem on the Windows PC, but I don't know what more to do. I've already configure it to run NetBIOS through TCP/IP, What else should I do?

Do you have a firewall installed on the Linux machine which would block the traffic from XP?

Can you do a "find computer" in XP? The default linux machine name would be localhost.

Yes, I did configure the Linux firewall for letting in a little; I'll bring it down during this process. But why am I able to ping the Windows computer through the IP and not the DNS name?
The Linux machine will see itself, but not anything else (except the Windows IP). |

Which machine is acting as your DNS server? You can only ping the IP because your DNS server does not know the name of both machines.

I agree with you that the problem is probably with XP. Have you tried the repair function in XP via the Local Area Connection Icon on the task bar?
