Linux Questions
I did a Probe of my monitor and graphics card from Xconfigurator, I also pressed yes when it asked if I wanted to startX when I booted to Linux (automatically)
How do I make it so I log in from the command prompt-like thing again? Also, how can I change my resolution (from inside the GUI), I have a 14inch Monitor and it's not liking 1024x768. When I type Xconfigurator in the Run Program dialog box it doesn't do anything (it doesn't even do anything on the HDD Activity light) Thanks,

If your getting a blank screen and looks like your monitor can't handle the resolution, press ctrl+alt backspace. This should kill the XServer and you will fall back to text mode.
Run Xconfigurator again. Make sure to test your configuration first. If you are not prompted by Xconfigurator to test the new configuration don't say yes when it ask if you wan't to start up the GUI when booting. You can always start up the gui in text mode by type startx. Hope this helps. |

3. Connecting to the Internet in Linux
When i try to connect with one ISP I get disconnected straight after all of the lovely sounds (I suspect invalid user/password but have checked over and over) When I connect with my other ISP I don't get disconnected but I cannot do anything. Netscape can't find any addresses Thanks, |

Have you entered DNS information?
Run linuxconf and enter your DNS info. |

I did try to enter the DNS info yes, but I can't remember if this was for the dodgy ISP or not. I will try with both.
Thanks, |

Look for a file called /etc/resolv.conf or /etc/ppp/resolv.conf.It should look somthing like this:
search mydomain.com nameserver (IP address) nameserver (IP address) Depending on your distro and your ISP it could be set up with some default nameservers. In SuSE 7.1 I had the /etc/ppp/resolv.conf setup with 2 IPs.Whenever I tried to connect with kppp I got this warning: "the file /etc/resolv.conf is missing or unreadable.Have your system administrator create this file(it can be empty) with the proper rights and permissions" I hit the ok button and it went ahead and allowed me to connect. Not wanting to have click off the warning each time I mistakenly created a directory called /etc/resolv.conf instead of a filewith that name.I connected without the missing file warning but it kept giving me "unknown host" error messages when it looked for my homepage.. First I renamed the dir and tried to surf the net and I could, but I got the missing file warning again. Finally,I got my brain working long enough to realize what I did and I deleted the /etc/resolv.conf dir I created and created a text file called /etc/resolv.conf and my joy was heard 'round the world(apartment) ![]() The file is still empty.HTH lynch |

Quite a few ways, but you will need a LOAF distribution... try this:

OK, thanks for the help. But I don't think I should bother. Seeing as I hadn't done really ANYTHING in Linux before I lost it. I will just reinstall
Thanks anyway, |

I'd suggest the contrary Jim, try to get it to work, who knows you might actually one day have a lot of stuff on your Linux and it dies on you, that way you would know recovery techniques. if you installed it once as a learning exercise .. rescure it once as a learning exercise. You can always reinstall. The entire procedure takes about 30 min including the time it takes for you to read the documentation eh?

I will read the documentation again and try it Thanks very much again, Last edited by fatboyjim; 08-04-2001 at 10:18 AM. |
