installation problem on same hard drive as win xp
i have 1 200gb hard drive that i've got win xp on. i followed pcmech.com's installation guide with creating seperate partitions for the ubuntu installation
/ - 10gb /home - 170gb swap - 5 gb for the / partition i turned on the bootable flag but when i restart after copying all the files and installing the grub it would try to load it from the hde2 but ubuntu says it does not exist?!?!? i've tried many times making sure the hde2 is there and partitioned correctly but no go!!! is it NOT possible for win xp and ubuntu to run on the same hard drive even if it's seperate partitions ?! any help appreciated! |

It is possible, but, it is a lot easier to run Linux from a seperate hard drive.

maybe edit your grub.conf file, Mike

There is no "hde", it's hda-hdd.
After you installed Ubuntu did you swap any of the IDE cables on your drives? If not, your drive should be hda2. Last edited by faulkner132; 05-16-2006 at 09:28 AM. |

man that's really weird i just looked at the partition screen closely during installation in ubuntu .. and it says ide5 - hde .. which doesn't that mean it's the 5th ide in the chain ?! man that's crazy i thought the max i could have was 4 ?!?!? anywayz i'm formatting the whole drive w/ the windows disc to see what happens cuz i don't know how that happened ....
i unplugged everything and made sure it was on ide 1 and the master drive and i double checked in the bios and it also says primary master was the ide hard drive( i only have 1 hard drive) ?!?!?! |

My suggestion would be to try a Live CD and see how it detects your hard drive. Ubuntu offers one, but my personal preference is Knoppix.

it also detects it as hde ...
i just found out on this board there are 4 ide controllers ... meaning there are four ports instead of the normal 2 ... but my only single hard drive is plugged into ide1 (there is no ide0) so i don't know if that matters ... |

Silly question - does it boot correctly using hde? If so, follow The Beatles advice and let it be.
