X won't load
I have been playing with this one on and off for a couple of weeks. I have Mandrake 8.0 installed on my system. When I try to start X, the server either dies or I get a gray screen. When it has the gray screen, it just sits there and goes no further. If I run xfdrake or Xconfigurator, it does a screen test and the screen loads fine. I don't see any errors in any of the logs about what is going on either. I have tried it with 4.03 and 3.36 with the same results. The card is a CardExpert GeForce MX2.
Over at MandrakeUser, I found this info, X loads but dies or shows just a grey screen Have you recently created a file like '.xinitrc' or '.xsessionrc' in your home directory? If so, you might have forgotten to make them executable. Run chmod 755 .xinitrc (or chmod 755 .xsessionrc). but I haven't added any dot files, nor or there any in my home directory. Any ideas on this one?

Only thing I can think of is...is your monitor properly configured? I'm take it the Geforce 2mx is supported by the latest version of X? I wonder if its maybe just the card itself?

I don't even see a file called .xsessiono-errors. Would it be in my home directory?

generate your own log file by appending startx with xerrors.log 2>&1 and then kill it and read errors when the grey screen shows up.

Well I tried to see the available options by startx by typing startx --help. Well X loaded just fine then. When I use just startx, it bombed out again. There turned out to be a .xsession-errors this time. The only errors are not being able to load a font
