Using Linux as a printer server?
Hi everybody,
I've converted an old IBM NetVista into a Folding@Home zombie computer (Go 13761!), and it has a hard lined connection to the router. Currently, it can see all the computers on the network. I was wondering if it were possible to make it a printing server as well. I tried to "Add a Printer" using the wizard, from another computer using Windows XP, but it doesn't seem to be able to see the Linux computer at all. Any suggestions? |

That is one of Microsofts shortfalls, from linux you can view, and access windows partitions / shares, but windows dosen't recognize the Linux file system.
Unless there is a third party software application available, I don't think it will work. Mike

File system "recognition" is not an issue across a network. People use Linux servers all the time and access them with Windows boxes. You just have to configure it correctly - and I'll leave that to someone with the experience, I haven't a clue how to do that.

I've actually moved the Linux computer to another location, but I'll keep your links handy. Thanks, guys!
