Using Linux as a printer server?

Hi everybody,

I've converted an old IBM NetVista into a Folding@Home zombie computer (Go 13761!), and it has a hard lined connection to the router. Currently, it can see all the computers on the network.

I was wondering if it were possible to make it a printing server as well. I tried to "Add a Printer" using the wizard, from another computer using Windows XP, but it doesn't seem to be able to see the Linux computer at all.

Any suggestions?

That is one of Microsofts shortfalls, from linux you can view, and access windows partitions / shares, but windows dosen't recognize the Linux file system.

Unless there is a third party software application available, I don't think it will work.

File system "recognition" is not an issue across a network. People use Linux servers all the time and access them with Windows boxes. You just have to configure it correctly - and I'll leave that to someone with the experience, I haven't a clue how to do that.

The site provided by faulkner132 looks like a good candidate for you but you may also want to take a look @ Samba, here's their homepage.

I've actually moved the Linux computer to another location, but I'll keep your links handy. Thanks, guys!
