bootup hangs in mepis

I tried out simply mepis as a live cd and was very impressed. Internet and all hardware (including printer) was set up with very little user interaction. I installed it to my hdd but unfotunately it hangs at the end of the boot up .The last line of the bootup reads---"Mepis Linux testing/ .unstable mepis1 tty1 Version is 3.4.3 I made 3 floppy boot discs (from windows) and tried to boot using them but I got tangled up with command lines . I then tried a 2nd install but with same result. I wondered if it was because I used the grub boot loader. I only want mepis on the hdd (20 gb) so I didn,t want to use grub at all but there did,nt seem to be any choice. Any help would be apreciated.

Thank you Ind-PC student. Sorry for the delay I,ve been away for a few days. That was an interesting site you gave me I,ve learnt a bit from there. Any way I tried booting up from another pc and every thing went right ! I suspect the video card was at fault (ati) I,ve heard they can cause problems. Thanks again for your input .
