I burned ubuntu to my cd and as I first use this os why is it looking to prepare disk space which I assume is from my hard drive. I thought this system was run on CD only. Can someone please tell me what's going on please?

There are two version of Ubuntu, the Installation version and the Live CD. The Live CD runs from the CD. Did you perhaps burn the Installation Version in error?

Chose a download site from this list. Then download the Desktop CD version, not the Server version. That should give you the trial version without loading to your hdd.
http://www.ubuntu.com/download Make sure also that you boot from this cd. Don't try to run it from within Windows. |

Go to ubuntu.com and download the latest version (Dapper Drake). Breezy Badger is still supported, but it will be easier for you to use the latest version.
Insert the CD into your computer and restart. Ubuntu will start automatically. Click install if you want to install. Simple as that. Download link: http://mirror.cs.umn.edu/ubuntu-rele...sktop-i386.iso Are you sure you want to use Linux? It requires above average knowledge the command line, and isn't for typical users. |

I am d/l the iso. It's about 730 MB. I have dsl 760 speed. Any idea how long it will take to d/l. The d/l box says 2 h 15 min. Is that right or will it be shorter.

Too many variables to answer that. 768 may be your max speed under ideal conditions and the server's upload speed my vary. Just wait it out. Patience is a virtue!

oh i decided to go with knoppix. I aslo noted that there are 3 files to d/l one for 750mb and 2 smaller files ending in .iso.md5 and iso.md5.asc. Do I need to d/l the 2 smaller ones as well?

No, they are to optionally verify your downloaded file.
