I am a beginner at Linux and need ur cooperation

Hi guys,

I have started to gain some interest in Linux and want to learn alot about it and I'll be thankful if you guys teach me about it.

I was reading the article titled " Red Hat Linux 5.2 Installation" posted by Matthew A. Dockter and an article titled "Linux for beginners including me" posted by John Stephen.

Both of these articles are easy to understand for me but their are certain questions in my mind that these articles have not answered.

I donot know which file system should we use to install Linux?
Can we use win98 bootable cd to make partitions for the installation of Linux?

Can we keep other operating systems like Win98,WinXP and Win2000 in the same Hard Disk where Linux is installed?

I hope my questions are clear.

Would appreciate a prompt response.

Regards,

Linux has it's own file system

The linux installation will have a partition manager that you can usually choose to use the free space or manually configure the partitions the way you want.

Yes, you can keep the other operating systems and dual boot to whichever you choose

I am playing around with 6.06.
Those tutorial are great but would be even more useful if they were easily printable.
I will print them off page by page but it would be easier as .pdf or some other method where you could hit print and get all 13 pages. Thanks for writing them J.

I believe the best thing for you to do is this. Go to www.on-disk.com and either download or buy a "live cd" of "PCLinuxOS". This is the most user friendly version I know of. I have tried several different ones before I tried this one. I now have it installed dual booting with xp. There is a "new users guide" and a very helpful and very friendly forum also. I can not say enough about this great linux o/s.
BTW a live cd in one you can run without installing to the hd and to see if it is the one for you.
Try it I am sure you will like it!!!

Ok glc, Ok !
I'm putting Linux on some old Thinkpads on Ebay for back to school and
PCMech will be the first payout from Paypal ! I don't want to hear anymore
'whats this, more computer rubbish ?' when the wife sees the credit card statement.

PS to all Linux first timers- Live CDs run very slow on old hardware (6X DVD on my TP600e)
and give a falsely negative impression. Zero fill and load Xubuntu -you will be very impressed.

PPS: Respect to Xubuntu !! I just stuck in a $20 Zonet wireless card ,entered my network name, and WEP key, and bingo ! Online. No drivers loaded by me.
(This card by luck has one of the Linux friendly chips- RaLink RT2500)
