Ubuntu Help Needed.

Well, I built my replacement computer (an athlon 64 with 1 gig of ram, on an Asus A8N-VM board) tonight. It works great. I had been planning an upgrade but I decided to spend a few extra bucks and buy a new harddrive. With parts on hand I was able to keep my old system. That is good because that is what I am writing this email from.

I attempted to install ubuntu 64 on the new harddrive (120 gig seagate). I used GParted to partition it into two primary drives, one 10 meg and the other about 100. (Swap and grub took the rest).

Trying to install ubuntu, it installed to my / directory. I tried all night to configure the darn thing to recognize the 100 gig partition and to create a mount point at /home. It simply refuses. It won't happen in ubuntu. Apparently it wants me to reformat everything as one big drive with / as the only mount point. I am doing something wrong. It is 1:00 in the morning and I did assemble a computer this evening. Obviously I am overlooking something basic. Help.

Are you installing from the live (desktop) cd or the alternate?
The live cd's installer has been a litle buggy in regards to partitioning while the text based installer used in the alternate disc still works quite well.

If you do have the live run it normally and check if gparted see's you're partitioning table correctly.

I just recently did a fresh reinstall of windows and Dapper on an AMD64 that had a messed up windows and Breezy. I put windows on the entire disc and then used the "manually partition" option from the alternate disck to set up my /, /home, and Fat32 partitions.

I also used the 32bit version. Like windows64, a lot of Linux apps don't run properly under 64.

Have you checked Ubuntuforums? A lot of expertise available there. You may also find this guide very helpfull.

Live Desktop

I thought about using the alternative cd. Help me with Linux 101. Do I want to mount / on a primary partition. I want /home on an extended partition created on that same primary partition. ?

I have the alternative Dapper 64 disk as well.

Success. After a few hours sleep, I woke up refreshed and able to concentrate. I used the Alternative Ubuntu 64 CD and did a text install. It worked like a champ. Now I have two fully functioning computers. Should I tell my wife?

So far so good with the Athlon 64 system.
