Ubuntu AMD64
Well have I learned somethings this evening.
First, running Linux on an Athlon 64 processor is not all peaches and cream. The machine is reasonably quick and I installed a version of Ubuntu maximized for it, but the AMD64 version doesn't come with all the bells and whistles found in the normal installed version of Ubuntu. Second, with help you can restore the functionality of Ubuntu by reinstalling the software (most notably firefox and its helper applications -- Java, Macromedia Flash, etc.) written for 32 bit processors. Fortunately AMD64 is backward compatible. No easy way around it. This will be fun. Well I have the 32 bit version of Java and Flash running. AMD/Intel price wars coming. AMD's stock is down despite a nice quarterly profit. Analysts expect a big fight next quarter. You all might consider taking advantage.
