Linux Firewall

Hi all

Once I have completed building my new PC, I will obvioulsy have a redunant PC just lying around, therefore an idea came to me why not use it as a firewall, firstly I get to play with Linux (as this will be my chosen OS) and secondly I get to play with security features.

Now the next question is, can anyone recommend a firewall for SUSE Linux. I have read about Smoothwall however I don't want it to be just strictly a firewall I want to be use it as a bit of a File server as well if thats possible.

Cheers

I don't know about a good firewall, but you can use it as a file server by simply running Samba. I have a Linux box that is only used as a file server running Samba.

Im no linux expert, much less a linux firewall expert but IPTables and IPChains seem to be the standard for linux packetfilters.
Although from what I hear they are not nearly as powerful as PF (which was not made for linux but there are ports for it).
Do you want it to do NAT also or will you put it in front of a router (or is it just a single computer that will be behind it)?

Firestarter is simply a GUI frontend for IP tables. It also handles NAT as well.
