Gaim is compatible with MSN messenger. It's a Gnome application, since you're interested in running Ubuntu.

Are you talking about the ISP service or the messaging program?

I'm currently using Gaim for MSN Messenger. It was VERY easy to set up--everything was automatic. It's also fully interoptable with every other IRC program. So you can load AIM, MSN and Yahoo screen names in there and pick which one you want to use, or use them all at once! Ubuntu rocks--'nuff said.

It isn't as pretty or feature loaded as MSN Live, but it works well, and doesn't eat a bunch of resources.
