What distro are you using?

If it is the popular Ubuntu, check out Jason's three guides: http://www.pcmech.com/os.htm
"Installing Ubuntu Linux", "Windows to Ubuntu Transition Guide" and "Configuring and Customizing Ubuntu"

Use the docs of whatever verision you are using. It is usualy the most trustworthy, precise and complete source of information for any software.
I even did a google search for you (Although I must admit, after looking at it, it seems like it was more of an afterthought, not complete by any standard im used to.)
http://doc.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/desktopguide/C/index.html
Its usualy not a good idea to follow 3rd party guides from people you dont know because for all you know they could know less than you do.

here is a downloadable linux book, that gives a very good overview of linux, and how it works. Great for the Linux beginner.
