What distro are you using?
If it is the popular Ubuntu, check out Jason's three guides: http://www.pcmech.com/os.htm "Installing Ubuntu Linux", "Windows to Ubuntu Transition Guide" and "Configuring and Customizing Ubuntu" |

Use the docs of whatever verision you are using. It is usualy the most trustworthy, precise and complete source of information for any software.
I even did a google search for you (Although I must admit, after looking at it, it seems like it was more of an afterthought, not complete by any standard im used to.) http://doc.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/desktopguide/C/index.html Its usualy not a good idea to follow 3rd party guides from people you dont know because for all you know they could know less than you do.

here is a downloadable linux book, that gives a very good overview of linux, and how it works. Great for the Linux beginner.
