Ubuntu blues...

Okay, I already have the CDs I've ordered and also, I installed it in my own comp, and it dual-booted sucessfully!

However, the system couldn't play MP3 files and other music files.(but it can play startup sounds okay - the sound card is detected.)

I did the Automatix thingy, but I read the documents - it says that it's illegal to do download codecs. Must I just continue downloading anyway or require to purchase these files?

And also, the Wine is very difficult to start. I just downloaded it, but don't know how or where to start the system. Is it a commandline option?

Sorry for being such an ultra newbie. Btw - also checked the guides provided in the PCMech section. The only thing that worries me is the codecs. If I can get these MP3 players running the operating system will be very fine to me. And finally, how am I going to install Linux programs there?

Send a message via MSN to Powertrip
Do a search using Ubuntu Package Manager for the missing codex (Use the default Ubuntu Audio Player and keep that error up and use that for your search), it's what I did found a couple codexes to download and my tunes are a playin'

Actualy, all you have to do is go to the Synaptic Package Manager (It should be one of the desktop menus (I forget the name since I don't have an Ubuntu installation with Gnome in front of me), if you haven't found it already; not many drop downs to choose from), then when it asks for your password, type whatever the password is for your default user (unless you set a root password, the use that). Once in, go to settings (I'm currently using Ubuntu 6.06, it maybe SLIGHTLY different, but I highly doubt it changed much if at all) and click on repositories. In there, click on Add, and for each 'Channel', check off all the components you see. Click ok and do the same for the next 'Channel'. Then exit that menu and select 'reload', if it hasn't did some downloading already. (Do it anyways just in case... it won't hurt anything; again, the menu may have changed in 6.10, correct me if I am right) Now search for gstreamer. You should get many a gstreamers* (the asterisk signifiying diversity). Look for one that ends in -mad (something like gstreamer0.8-mad) for mp3 playback, and gstreamer0.8-ffmpeg for avi, mpg, and a few other video codecs.

And if you are experiencing a horrible time with Totem, like I was having, install a different video player. I use Mplayer and from time to time, xine.

While I am at it... if you like to view videos online, search mozilla-mplayer. That, and libflash (or just search flash, and read the descriptions for the flash from Adobe, and not gplash (it's in too bad of a state to be used by the general Ubuntu population, IMHO)).

Tells you how to enable all the repositories, then use Automatix (on the next page) to install the codecs.
The notice you see in Automatix is regarding the US's Digital Millenium Rights Act which makes it technically illegal to install it on an OS without paying royalities to the developers. It's you choice as to whether or not to install it.
