Ubuntu is a great way to start with Linux. It is very popular, so support and help is easy to find. And we have some great articles to get you started.

Great choice! Buddy of mine is running with this and not only is it a nice distro, it's beautiful to look at too. Have a live cd and going to install it soon myself. Sure is good to see Linux use growing like it is.

I just downloaded the x64 edition of ubuntu 6.10... launched with the live cd and works pretty good... But now i have a big cloud in my mind.... Some (confsion)Faulkner told me to get the 32 bit but i got th 64... now wht are the benefits of the 64 towards the 32??? also what king of stability issues am i going to see with the x64?
Im downloadind the 32 for myh other pc... should i keep the 64? what is 64 bit all about? Last edited by arix; 11-23-2006 at 02:22 PM. |

32-bit will be more stable because pretty much all the packages and device drivers for Linux (and any other OS for that matter) are still only compiled for 32-bit and have not been updated to 64-bit yet. |

This is the situation...
I subscribed To a linux course.... i take 4hours a week.... (basics, setting up networks and servers based on linux, introdiction to the shell, etc) They have 16 pc's for students runing 32bit versions of linux (Debian) Since i have to practice at home im clueless on what i should get... I want the x64bt edition but im not sure if i am going o be able to run 32bit apps... What do u recommend??? i have both CDS 32 an 64 Also my pc specs are: 3800+ athlon 64 939 NF4 ultra mobo EVGA gforce 6 series SB live! 7.1 Can i find drivers on the 64bit scene for my system? 32-bit is the industry standard right now.
I stand behind my recommendation of not using 64-bit but it sounds like you *really* want to. I'm not trying to discourage you from running 64-bit, but just letting you know you may run across some issues you will not be able to resolve due to either hardware drivers or lack of widespread software support for 64-bit OS's. |

Yes i understand that part... I just installed the 32 bit and im really enyoing it... some hardaware issues like not recognising processor, vid card, etc i want to know a way to resolve thin and since then im going to be fine with my new OS.

I would also stick with 6.06 32 bit - 6.10 apparently is having some serious stability issues from what I have been reading. It's out of beta but it needs some more work.

So far so good for me. I've been running it a week and had no stability issues at all (knock on wood). I would say 6.10 is stable enough for everyday use. |
