Ubuntu is a great way to start with Linux. It is very popular, so support and help is easy to find. And we have some great articles to get you started.

You can get the 64-bit version HERE, but as far as it being better, I really wouldn't be able to tell you without your machine's specs.

The installation guide is no longer applicable. If you decide to go with Ubuntu, please see my 3 updated guides for the most recent version (6.06) here:
http://www.132solutions.com/ubuntu.php

Get the 32-bit version, much more stable than the 64-bit.

Great choice! Buddy of mine is running with this and not only is it a nice distro, it's beautiful to look at too. Have a live cd and going to install it soon myself. Sure is good to see Linux use growing like it is.

I recommend 6.06 as 6.10 is still beta software.

32-bit will be more stable because pretty much all the packages and device drivers for Linux (and any other OS for that matter) are still only compiled for 32-bit and have not been updated to 64-bit yet.

This is the situation...
I subscribed To a linux course.... i take 4hours a week.... (basics, setting up networks and servers based on linux, introdiction to the shell, etc)
They have 16 pc's for students runing 32bit versions of linux (Debian)
Since i have to practice at home im clueless on what i should get...
I want the x64bt edition but im not sure if i am going o be able to run 32bit apps... What do u recommend??? i have both CDS 32 an 64

Also my pc specs are:
3800+ athlon 64 939
NF4 ultra mobo
EVGA gforce 6 series
SB live! 7.1

Can i find drivers on the 64bit scene for my system?

32-bit is the industry standard right now.
I stand behind my recommendation of not using 64-bit but it sounds like you *really* want to. I'm not trying to discourage you from running 64-bit, but just letting you know you may run across some issues you will not be able to resolve due to either hardware drivers or lack of widespread software support for 64-bit OS's.

I would also stick with 6.06 32 bit - 6.10 apparently is having some serious stability issues from what I have been reading. It's out of beta but it needs some more work.

There have been a slew of GNOME and other core package (OpenOffice, GIMP, etc.) updates in the past few days.

So far so good for me. I've been running it a week and had no stability issues at all (knock on wood). I would say 6.10 is stable enough for everyday use.
