ubuntu booting to command line instead of gui

i am running ubuntu 6.06. i had 3ddesk installed and it ahd been working fine for awhile. about 20 minutes ago, i ran it and it started freaking out, going in different directions and not exiting when i hit enter to go to the desktop.

i restarted the computer by hitting the reset button (since i couldn't figure out how to escape it) and when it restarted, i was at the command line, asking for a login. i logged in, but it just stays at the command line.

i can't figure out how to get back into the gui. any help would be appreciated

After logging in, use the startx command.

i tried to do that and it just sat at a blank screen with a mouse on it for almost a half hour. i ended up just formatting and starting over and i am posting from that computer. i had no important data on here, i am just trying to learn ubuntu and wanted to see if i could get out of the problem without formatting.
