Hey, a fast and compact Linux??
I got interested in Linux becuase it was described as small and fast... but the distros I tried, were about the same as Windows.
I was thinking of trying Damm Small Linux but this might be a better answer - Puppy Linux. They say it will run off a HD, CD, or USB drive and 128 mb memory is required. Excellent, I have been looking for an OS that would run on older computer also. Anyone here triied this? I can't believe it is as they claim, incredbile if true. http://www.puppylinux.org/user/viewpage.php?page_id=3 |

Damm Small Linux will also run from a USB drive and there are several Linux versions that run from a CD.

I have tried Suse and Knoopix from a CD... really, really, slow. I wonder how much faster running of a flash drive would be?
Puppy loads the whole OS into memory, so it should be pretty fast. |

Running from CD is ridiculously slow. CD's read at something absurd like ~2 MB / sec. Seek time is terrible as well. USB would be significantly faster.
