Mixed network WinXP/Linux
I have three WinXP-Home machines networked and talking ot each other, and one Linux machine also connected but not seeing the Win network which is set up as: Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, and TCP/IP.
The Linux is Red Hat 8. How can I get them to see each other, so I can transfer files etc.? All machines see the internet OK. The switch is a Netgear DG845 router. Thanks for any ideas. |

http://us1.samba.org/samba/
is one way, the only problem is that windows will not recognize a Linux type file system, also I don't think that writing to a NTFS partition from Linux has been perfected, (you'll need to write to MS, and ask why can't OS's just get along). But I'd say Samba is your best option. Mike

Writing to a filesystem is not an issue across a network. I can push and pull to and from my Windows shares fine from my Linux box.

Since Samba's file structure is NFS (network file system), the client writing to or reading from this resource is controlled by Samba. The issues with NTFS specifically relate to mounting a hard drive locally and trying to write to it. |

I don't know about Red Hat, but I know with my Kubuntu it was a piece of cake connecting to my Windows shares. I did it all through the GUI and access the shares through Konqueror.
Accessing the Linux box from the Windows box is a different story. I haven't had the ambition to start digging into that yet - Linux has a lot better security than Windows. Last edited by glc; 01-15-2007 at 09:32 AM. |

Here is a tutorial with screenshots for KDE:
http://www.reallylinux.com/docs/sambaserver.shtml The process will be the same for GNOME, but the screens will look different. |
