If I went with Ubuntu...

Can I use most or all of my personal programs I have for my PC like Nero, Mozilla and all the DVD burning software?

Thanks

Nope. Windows software cannot be installed, you need Linux-compatible software, and you will find open source versions of just about anything you need, but you won't find Nero.

Ubuntu should install by default enough utilities for you to get started - CD/DVD burning, a usable web browser, media player, etc.

Once ubuntu is installed, open up Synaptic package manager, and you'll have a HUGE list of available programs. Just click, install, and enjoy!

OK everyone here goes.
Bought the book; Beginning Ubuntu Linux by Keir Thomas. Read most of it to get started. Backed up what I thought I should and am now going to try to put it on my HD with a dual boot with a pirated(opps) version of XP. Read the stickies and most info on the forum.

Any suggestions before I get started?

Suggestions:

1) Don't use pirated software
2) Don' tell us about the pirated software you use
3) Be patient, Ubuntu is not Windows, things will be different and you will have to work through them. Its just like when you first learned to use Windows waaaaay back when, so dont expect to suddenly know everything about it.

You can use WINE(completely free, is very good at the moment.), Cedega(<< costs $, geared for games, not very good) or CrossOver Office(<<< Same as WINE, but much easier to use, and backed by a company.) to run Windows applications. They are not perfect, but are great solutions. WINE being the Open Source Software the other ones are based on. It has came a long way and is able to run a large amount of software. CrossOver Office uses current versions of WINE, but it is pay to use, though it does all the incredibly hard work for software not so easy to install. Not to say everything is hard to install in WINE, it just can be. Cedega is based on a much older version of WINE when WINE was still using the MIT license, and seems to be out of steam. It may pick up, so keep an eye on it, but just give your gaming needs a chance with WINE, for you may be able to get it to work before you spend money.

And the latest Nero was ported to Linux, and is supported by Nero.

By the way, you should ask Linux specific questions here: LinuxQuestions.org. They have a newbie section.

I've never had any success with WINE. Chaos, have you actually gotten stuff to work? In my experience, the install.exe will run great, but the installed prog didin't work.....That was a year ago tho....

I have gotten several pieces of software to run under WINE. Here is some examples:

MS Office 1997 (never paid for others... so I didn't get to try.)
World of Warcraft
Half-Life 1 games
Half-Life 2 games
Internet Explorer
iTunes
Windows Media Player
Flash 9 (no need anymore)
much more...

mostly games...

It isn't difficult. WINE is free, but requires a little command line knowledge.

CrossOver Office is fantastic, it requires just to install the program from command line (simple ./filename), and you can click your way around programs.

That isn't to say every program works, it simply is not true, but many do, and more are workable as time passes.

If you really need to run Windows software and Linux do a dual boot, wine can have problems in some games, (removed by moderator).

Maybe he means... 'one' is not a dime. 'one' is 'one'.

So a dime and a quarter.

Great web developing software off the top of my head:

NVU (highly recommended... easy to use)

Quanta

BlueFish

a text editor (your choice of the best: vi, vi or emacs ... I'm just kidding! vi).

My site should be back up within a week or so.
We did an OS upgrade on the server this weekend and I haven't had time to get it back up yet.

They are severely outdated... especially the install guide.
They refer to the 5.10 release which is 3 releases retired.

Make sure your dvd drive is set to boot first in the BIOS.
