X windows video
Last night I upgraded my old 586x133 motherboard to a FIC VA 503+ with a 500mhz K 6-2 processor with 128 meg of PC-100 ram. Everything seems to be installed properly. It seems to be running perfectly well. I installed the same old PCI video card and monitor I was using before. Before Xwindows worked. While I can load up Linux (Red Hat 6.0) and run it in terminal mode with no difficulty, when I try to load Xwindows the screen goes black (with only a mouse pointer showing.) When I run Xconfigurator it finds my video card and monitor and installs both to the default settings. But the screen again goes black with the same mouse pointer. I think its a bios problem since the card and monitor haven't changed and were working very well before. I have already swapped out monitors and the second monitor had the same problem. I haven't yet swapped video cards. Any thoughts on trouble shooting? I could reformat and see if it installs in Windows 98, but the whole purpose of this exercise is to learn linux.

For the few who read the post, the problem was with the video card. I swapped cards and solved the problem. Linux works a lot better with a faster processor and 128 meg of ram.
