Having problem w/Gateway,Ubuntu install

This is like the third install of Ubuntu on older Gateway boxes. Have had no problems previously and am getting I/O errors on this go around. I'll do an out of box test (if I have to) but just checking to see if you folks know of any road blocks with a Gateway system that prevents an easy reformat and install of a linux os? (Basically I'm trying to get this going to give to someone, who's household was ripped off,of almost everything, and this'll get them connected to work and school.)
The ME os is non-operational and is unrecoverable. With the install, it loads the kernel 100%, but locks up and eventually gives the I/O error report. Thanks!
EDIT: Turned out to be a bad cd-rom drive! Had an extra and is booting fine.
