Linux what fun????

I just fresh installed redhat 7.1. Started off good but then I started having all sorts of problems with the graphics. First KDE came up in all sorts of psychadelic colours. Hmm had to go back to xf86config to try to change the settings. Finally got the colours right but then after 5 minutes in to a session the screen would blank out, never to be recovered and required a reset (by the on/off switch.) Well time and again this happened and nothing would set it right.

Sooooo, I decided to install 6.2. After a shakey (the screen was jittering at 75Hz back and forth during the installation) start I managed to do a fresh install of 6.2, no problems (except the sound was now out).

Soooooooo, I decided to do an update to 7.1 instead of a fresh install.

Well the graphics are now stable, but still no sound.

I will never again complain about a windows install (well at least for the next year).

The graphics card is a permedia2. Why are redhats latest drivers not as stable as their old ones? Is Linux going the way of windows with over bloated configurations (800MB install).

Oh well, such is life maybe 8.1 will be better.

Where the hell do you change/update drivers, looks like I got some work to do to learn unix variants. Maybe I,ll try mandrake.

I know everyone seems to love Red Hat and Mandrake, but my office mate on campus just installed the Corel release of Linux. Had 0 problems. He even has three Windoze proggies ported over within the last week or so.

When I get around to Linux, Corel will most likely be my first choice.

Just my .02$

I have tried a ton of linux distributions. I have distributions really ancient, and I have never ever dealt with a distribution as bad as Corel . No wonder why they are almost wiped out.

Kraken .. check the support status on your video card for X servers.
