Unhappy Rbooting problem to install Ubuntu

Dear Friends,

Thanks for all your help in solving our PC problems.

I have a AMD Athlon 3000+ processor, AS Rock motherboard with 80GB of SATA+40 B of IDE HDD, 1.5 GB DDR1 RAM, SATA DVD Writer with Windows XP professional.

Now I am interested in installing Ubuntu Linux software and created a seperate 15GB partition on my IDE hard disk using Partition magic.

I got a bootable Ubuntu DVD to install the OS. Now I am facing a peculiar problem. My system is not being booted from DVD drive and it is going to HDD only whenever I boot.

To change the config to boot from DVD, I tried the following.
1. While system is booting, I pressed F11, it went to boot sequence menu. But the DVD is not listed in that and 1 floppy drive and 2 HDDs are listed in that.
2. I typed F2 after rebooting and opened the Bios Setup. In the 'Boot' tab, I could see only 2 options a)DVD and B) HDD. By default the option was first HDD and next DVD.
I modified the sequence to DVD and then HDD. Pressed F10 to save and exit. Again rebooted the system keeping the bootable DVD in the Drive but the system booted from HDD only.

I need help to solve this problem. Can any one help me sorting this out. Whether do I need to reinstall some drivers or Bios etc.

Is there any option to install Ubutu from Windows (without booting from DVD)?

Please help me.

Advance thank you.

Regards,

Srinath

Can you boot off of any other bootable cds or dvds other than the ubuntu dvd? Where did you get the ubuntu dvd, i.e. did you download and burn it yourself or did you get it from another source? In windows, when you put the ubuntu dvd in the drive can you describe what file(s) you see on the dvd?

Dear Kigoretrout,
I am not able to boot from any other CD or DVD also.

I am subscriber of a Technological magazine called 'Digit' from India. I got a free DVD from this magazine with freee ubuntu Distro. This is a bootable DVD. This DVD works fine on my Laptop- it boots and asks to install.

I'll tell you about what I see on the DVD in a very short while please.

Thanks,

Assuming your dvd drive is functioning properly, the ability to boot from your dvd drive is set in the bios setup. The fact that you can't boot off of any bootable cd or dvd indicates that either the dvd drive is not functioning properly or your bios is not set to allow you to boot from the dvd drive. Double check the boot order in your bios setup and also check to make sure your dvd drive is properly detected there. If you are not sure what to do here, you may want to post your non-booting dvd drive problem in the Drives and Storage forum. If you do so post the make and model of your computer; I assume it's a laptop of some sort
.
To answer your original question, there's an application called wubi that allows an installation of ubuntu from within windows:

http://wubi.sourceforge.net/

I haven't used it myself and from all reports it's very much beta, if not alpha, software, i.e. it's very buggy. I do not recommend using wubi.
