I installed Linux Mandrake 8.1 on an old Packard Bell P-133 with 48mb ram. The first install said it was successful but when I rebooted the video rolled and looked like it needed horizontal and vertical hold adjustments on an old TV (also only covered 1/3 of screen - black areas on top and bottom). I couldn't find anywhere to change type of monitor. (had set for STD VGA 640x480) I uninstalled and reinstalled and changed type of monitor to STD 600x800 and again install said everything was ok but on reboot I had a small logon image that was rounded out on both edges and no mouse or keyboard support. (I don't know if I had mouse or keyboard on the first install). Also the harddrive is a 1.2g but it wouldn't hold the "typical" install items. Is Linux a space hog? Any help will be appreciated.

Hi,
Sounds like you definatly have an X-server problem. Do you know what vid card and monitor refresh rate you have? Do you remember what version of x-free you used? There are 3 that are available. 3.3.6, 3.3.6 3D, and 4.03(?). On mine (Mandy 8.0) I replaced the monitor and added a nic, plus I changed the file system. So I did a reinstall. I used to run x-free 3.3.6 3D, but my new monitor don't like it, so I used the 4.0.3 version. You may need to try each of them to find out which one will work. That old P-B 133 is going to have a tough time running 8.1. Most certianly with only 48megs of ram. X takes some horsepower to run. The new versions of Mandy are made with PII's-P4's in mind and at least 64 meg of ram and the more the merrier. It is akin to getting Win XP to run on it. X might not run on it. I would suggest and older version, say like Mandy 7.2, or RedHat 6.2 with a light wndow manager like ice or Blackbox. And definatly more ram, say at least 128megs. Linux is not a space-hog. The kernel is very small. There are distros' that literally fit on a 1.44 floppy. What you are seeing is Mandy trying to install every program that it thinks you might ever want to use. Unlike a Windows install, which is just the OS, and then you start installing programs to make it useful. Mandy not only installs the OS, but everything you need to start doing real work with it. There are several office suites (K-Office and StarOffice), half-a-dozendifferent terminals to Apachie server and Samba to I think 4 different windowmanagers and Desktops, plus every game they can cram on the CD's. It all takes a fair amount of room. My 3.2gig ends up about 50-60% used on a typical install. You need to do an expert install and select only what you think you might need or can fit. Sorry to be so windy, hope this helps you out some. OOPS!

I'll try an earlier version of Mandrake or maybe Redhat and see what happens. Thanks again!

Mandy, that is a funny one Oops.
An older version of Slack or Redhat may be in order.

Well, it is a French distro. Not nearly as macho as say, Slack, or Debian. LOL.
OOPS! |
