first time linux

so i am ready to try linux... i am downloading ubuntu.. is this a good version for a first timer to try or should i look for another release.... and is there anything i need to know before installing this?

Ubuntu is a perfect place to start.

The biggest thing you need to know is Linux Is Not Windows. http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm
As long as you don't expect it to look and act just like Windows, you will love it.

Amen. I started just recently on Ubuntu, and THEN I learned about Ubuntu Studio. I can't stay off of it.

i think i am going to try to run it off virtual pc first and see if i like it... before i devote any partitions to it... can this be done?

ok so i figured out i could run from the cd....... are there any display drivers available to run at 1440x900
