XP not showing ntfs partition after Ubuntu install

My system is like this: One 80GB partitioned as entirely for XP. THe second is for ubuntu. When I installed ubuntu on this drive, I thought it was configured for 20GB ext3 for ubuntu, and 50GB left in ntfs for swapping between OS's. It turned out that it wad the other way round. 50Gb for ubuntu and 20Gb ntfs. Anyway, XP refuses to display the 20GB ntfs volume in My computer. Ubuntu says it is ntfs so XP should recognise it. What could be the problem?

nvm, it is showing the partition now.

Another reansonably serious problem, Linux is constantly using my internet connection. Today I left the internet connected for 8 hours while I was away and it used nearly 400mb!
I'm on a 5GB/month plan so that just isn't cool. If I open network, it shows there is constanly a steady dl of 12kb/s or 300pkts/second
While in Win XP while it is idle no data is sent/recieved so that is cool. I click the network icon and it shows no packets activity.

Any Ideas?

If you've just installed Ubuntu it will be downloading updates, but not to the 400Mb level.

Even though linux is generally safer than Windows you can still install a firewall and anti-virus; I suggest installing automatix: http://www.getautomatix.com/ as that will give nice easy access to the relevant software and things like codecs and so on.

Also, if you want to install graphic card drivers - especailly if you have an ATi based card then I recommend installing Envy: http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html - it covers both Nvidia and ATi so don't worry about the URL having only Nvidia in it.
