gethostbyaddr() failed
I'm on a campus-wide network at school. I have a machine we'll call typhoid.school.edu. My school has a dhcp server and typhoid seems to be getting an ip address, and is able to traverse the network and use internet resources just fine, but I can't to anything name wise with it. (For Example I have to telnet to 10.162.8.184 instead of typhoid) ping -a of the address doesn't resolve a name, and I keep gettting gethostbyaddr() failed in my syslog. Does anyone know how to get my machine to be accessible by it's hostname?
TIA, setheroo |

There's probably no way for you to get it to work unless you can hack into the administration, which is not recommended at all and highly illegal.
If your on a school network system your probably locked into a user setting and cannot run any programs that are not already there. If you can load and run programs you still have to deal with accesability problems, like getting past your systems firewalls etc.. If you really need to run the program talk to your system administrator |
