Hi guys,
I am in the midst of installing Mandrake 8.0 on an older 200Mhz Dell (to act as a gateway/firewall for my cable connection). I have and I am running into an issue with my CD-ROM upon installation. I have created a boot disk via RawWrite for Windows (cdrom.img). As the machine is booting and preparing to do its thing...it halts right after the "Welcome to Linux - Mandrake...running install" banner stating "Error! No CDRom Device Found". I have tried two other CD-ROM drives assuming the original one was bad...but I get the same result. Does anyone have any tips on how to get the CD recognized or a way around it? The machine currently has RH 4.3 on it and (obviously) I want to do a fresh install with Mandrake...I have installed Mandrake before on other machines with no issues. When RH was installed on this machine...way back when...the CD ROM was used with no hitches. Any help will be much appreciated! Thx!

Hi,
I assume that you can't just boot directly from the CD? Even the downloaded CD's are iso and bootable. If you can't boot from the CD my best guess is that RawWrite is borking up the floppy. Can you try another box to make your floppy? Out of curiosity, what brand CDROM are you using? OOPS!

No this is an old Dell. bios does not have that option. I am using a Creative Labs 32x drive, if that helps at all. I am thinking the cable might bad...which I am going to change shortly and see what happens. I will give te floppy a try on my laptop and see how that goes.
Thanks for the reply!

I had a Creative 24x that worked great with Linux, so you shouldn't have any trouble with it. The cable is a good idea. Had one go bad myself. It got kinked and would work intermitantly. Took me a couple of days to figure it out. Hope it is the cable, I like easy fixes!!

same type of prob here except w/hdd
Is the jumper for your cdrom set for master? Is it on Ide channel by itself? Do u also hav a cdrw installed? My cdwr is recognized over my cdrom. With me it is that there simply isn't any support for the HPT366 onbrd controller chip for ATA66 which is what my hdd is. But since you hav installed RH using same cd just rechk your hdware connections.

The CD is set as a master and it is alone on IDE2. I did swap cables as well and received the same results.
I think my next route will be to prep the machine for a Win95 install by loading DOS and the CD Drivers on the machine and then see if I can get the Mandrake CD to run from DOS. I already formatted the drive (format c: /s) so it should be bootable now... The saga continues.

Chk Bios Settings for Windows
Red an avid Mandrake friend said all he had to do was set his bios to PnP OS enabled b/c in the latest releases 2.4.8-26mdk Linux is handled by a direct read of your sys bios relying on it to recognize hardware.

nightsky,
The BIOS in this machine is so old that it does not have that option: Phoenix BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A20 Not sure if there is an upgrade for the BIOS on this old Dell. ASFAIK I have the most recent BIOS for this machine. (Its a Dell Optiplex with a P200)...dated 1995. Gonna give the DOS route a whirl tonight though. |

In case anyone is interested...
I worked my way around this CD-ROM issue. I made it a slave to the IDE1 HDD and plugged my second HDD into IDE2...booted with the install floppy and away the install went....almost flawlessly. Go figure...Mandrake installed properly and runs pretty good...but my NICs are not being seen properly in the machine, so that is the next hurdle. Argh!!

Thank u RedV6, I hav cdrm and cdw both set to master as I mentioned be4 maybe I should make cdrm slave even if its sitting alone in ide1? Or shld I setup the cdrw as slave in ide2? Is your hdd ata66 too?

That is how I have mine setup now...CD Rom as slave on IDE1...Works fine and I will probably leave it that way. Came to me in the middle of the night one night while I was trying to figure out how to fool the machine with the CD on IDE2..Once Mandrake loaded I did not have any issues at all aside from my NIC's that I am currently working on.
