PnP Bios Setup for Linux Install
Hi all,
In prep for a linux install I set my bios to enable PnP OS option but when I do Win98SE kicks back the following Error Message: "While Initilizing Device IOS Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your computer." And my power button won't shut off. I need to emable PnP OS option in my bios so that Linux can find my hdd controllers. Can anyone have an idea of what is going on? Thanks all

Yes, Linux is PNP, but not like Windows. I have my machine set to a non-PNP OS in the BIOS. This lets the BIOS assign things before the OS boots. It works great in Linux. The reason I did this was because I had modem that would not work in Linux unless I set things up this way.

What HDD controller are u using? Are you assigning an IRQ to it from the BIOS? Linux really functions much better with No for PnP in BIOS

Hdd uses ata66 HPT366 onbrd Controller
To be honest I wish I had stuck w/a simpler hdware scheme now. I have HPT366 onbrd contrllers that support ata33 and ata66 and I am confused b/c in my Device Manager 2Scsi Entries appear. So when I try to install linux do I choose SCSI or UDMA or 66ATA or 33ATA seems like the UDMA and ATA stuff is kind of like the scsi named controllers? HDD is 7200RPM Maxtor Drv and it uses the ATA66. As for IRQ settings are they relatated to the position of slots on the mobo? Thanks
