resolving hostnames
I can't seem to contact my machine by it's hostname. (typhoid.tristate.edu)
this is the output for my hostname, resolv.conf, and ifconfig. The Ip address is in an acceptable range, the machines are in the same subnets, the nameserver address is correct, the domain is correct, is there something I'm missing here? root@typhoid:/etc# ifconfig eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:C0:F0:17:88:93 inet addr:10.162.8.184 Bcast:10.162.11.255 Mask:255.255.252.0 UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:3807 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:302 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:100 Interrupt:11 Base address:0xfc00 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:3924 Metric:1 RX packets:18 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:18 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 root@typhoid:/etc# cat resolv.conf domain tristate.edu nameserver 10.162.8.2 search tristate.edu root@typhoid:/etc# echo $HOSTNAME typhoid root@typhoid:/etc# |
